Dr. Ryan's research focuses on using human neuroimaging to understand how diabetes and the brain interact. Loss of sensitivity to insulin is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes, but how insulin resistance affects insulin signaling in the human brain is poorly understood. By using a combination of metabolic methods and functional MRI, Dr. Ryan's goal is to understand how insulin resistance in the brain contributes to diseases like obesity and depression.
